Girls' Hockey Remains Unbeaten

The 2019-20 academic year is only five weeks old, but the Northwood School Girls’ Ice Hockey team already boasts an impressive 10-0 record to start to their season. The team returned a sizable portion of their roster from last year and made some key additions this fall. The combination of returning experience and additional depth through the lineup has thus far led to success on the ice. After beginning the season with home wins against Ontario Hockey Academy and the East Coast Wizards, the Huskies traveled to Burlington, VT and Massachusetts where they continued their winning ways; collecting seven road victories in the process. The undefeated start to the season is impressive, but perhaps most impressive has been the team’s ability to keep opponents off the scoreboard. Thus far Northwood has only allowed five goals against and earned shutouts in half of its contests. This has all been accomplished with the team under the tutelage of new head coach, Trevor Gilligan ‘03. Gilligan takes over after a stint with the boys’ teams at Northwood. With returning coach, Leigh Getz, they seem to have found a recipe that works for this group.

The coaches have been pleased with the team’s early success, but also know it’s a long season. Coach Gilligan commented, “It has been a strong start to the year and a lot of fun, but we all understand it’s October and the bulk of our season is in front of us. The girls have done a tremendous job bringing a strong effort every day and have been attentive in all aspects of their preparation.”

Speaking to the combination of experienced returners welcoming in new teammates he continued, “The returners have been great about welcoming the new additions to our program. They have created a positive culture which we hope continues for years to come.”

In closing Coach Gilligan added, "We will continue to bring our best effort every day and see how long we can ride this wave."

As fans, we look forward to supporting this group every step of the way. The Huskies will look to continue their unbeaten streak as they return home this weekend to face Syracuse Valley. Games are at the Lake Placid Olympic Center Saturday Oct. 12th at 2pm and Sunday Oct. 13th at 10am.
