Jr. Boys Make Championship Run

Jr. Boys Make Championship Run

Northwood’s Boys' Junior Hockey team, led by Coaches Chadd Cassidy and Trevor Gilligan ’03, qualified for the USA National Championships in Grand Rapids, Michigan, this spring by going 5-0 in the New York State tournament and beating Rochester in the finals. This is the first year Northwood has had a U18 national-bound team and they proudly represented Northwood on the national stage.   Sixteen teams qualified for this prestigious event. Entering the tournament as the 9 seed, the Juniors went 2-1 in preliminary round play. They beat Victory Honda and Sioux Falls and lost to Shattuck St. Mary's. That earned the group a trip to the quarter finals where Northwood faced the number 2 seed BC Eagles. Northwood dominated the game and earned a convincing 6-3 win and a spot in the semi-finals.

A short-handed Husky squad gave up 3 goals in the first period against the NJ Avalanche. Despite the rocky start, the team battled back, making the game 3-1 in the third and applied a lot of pressure on the opposition. Unfortunately, the comeback fell short and NJ added an empty net goal.

The Junior Team had its historic season end with a 3rd place finish at the USA National Championships and closed out the season with a record 51 wins and the school's first-ever Tier 1 State Championship.
