A Distinct Academic Experience

In addition to our comprehensive college-prep curriculum, we offer several distinct academic programs that are unique to Northwood School. Like many small boarding schools, we provide countless opportunities for “hands-on” learning in our classrooms, but we also go beyond what is offered elsewhere. Our science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses and co-curricular programs provide students with diverse, innovative, world-class learning opportunities in several different areas.

Benefits of STEM Education

High-quality STEM education is critical for students to thrive in the modern world. STEM occupations are growing at a significantly faster rate than average, and university graduates with STEM degrees have higher earning potentials than their peers.

However, STEM opportunities do not just enhance learning for science and tech-loving students. Exposure to STEM concepts and hands-on learning provides all students with the critical thinking skills, mathematical literacy, and science acumen they need to become the next generation of innovators across all types of academic, athletic, and personal pursuits.

Signature STEM Programs at Northwood

Our signature STEM programs focus on the following areas:

  • Learn, Engage, Apply, Perform (LEAP)

  • Innovation and Design

  • Entrepreneurial Studies

  • Robotics & Engineering

These courses provide students with a chance to gain practical first-hand experiences that are seldom offered at the high school level. These experiences help our students develop their passions and interests, as well as distinguish Northwood School students during the college admission process.

STEM courses and co-curricular opportunities are critical for contemporary students, and at Northwood School, we are uniquely positioned to provide our students with STEM-based opportunities they cannot get anywhere else. From the stunning natural beauty and science-in-action of the Adirondack Mountains, to the extensive learning opportunities at the Innovation Hub in downtown Lake Placid, to the collaborations with local scientists and business owners, our STEM programming is designed to nurture our students academically and personally.
