Set amongst the Adirondack mountains, Northwood School is a one-of-a-kind educational offering in Lake Placid, New York – the site for the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. Northwood is a place where a world-class education combines with exceptional athletics and a full boarding experience in stunning American nature.
Northwood School is excited to announce a new path forward for our boys’ hockey program. For the 2025-26 season and beyond, Northwood will have three boys’ teams:
-
16U AAA
-
18U AAA
-
Prep
The long and storied ice hockey tradition at Northwood School has always been a hallmark of our community. Over the years our hockey program has produced numerous alumni that have gone on to play collegiately at the Division I and III levels, professionally, as well as several Olympians.
The restructuring of our program will allow more student-athletes the opportunity to combine a top-rated education with an elite ice hockey program.
The 16U AAA team will continue to play in the newly formed Northern Schools Hockey Conference and will be led by current Prep Assistant coach Shawn Lynch ’13.
The Prep team will continue to play in the Prep Hockey Conference (PHC) and be led by Stephen Mallaro ‘06.
The 18U AAA team coaches and schedule will be announced in the near future.
All three teams will play a rigorous seven-month schedule, with tournament play throughout the United States and Canada.
“The restructuring of our boys’ hockey program will provide a strong foundation for the future and catapult the development of our hockey players and teams. Shawn is the perfect fit to improve and enhance younger players to move through our system and achieve their dreams.”
Trevor Gilligan ‘03 Athletic Director
“It’s an exciting time to be a hockey coach here at Northwood. The program is in a great spot right now with two very competitive, well coached teams, and this model will strengthen the development aspect of our program. Our vision is to recruit and retain talented batches of younger players that can grow and climb the ladder here. The overall experience will continue to be the best part about being at Northwood, and this decision will make the hockey program more attractive for younger student-athletes and their families.”
